Best UC for Pre-Med

Do you have what it takes to be a doctor? That's the question the pre-med track hopes to answer in undergrad. If you want to try, the UC system has many programs that can support you on the pre-med path.

Best Overall

UC Berkeley is often considered the best pre-med program due to its combined BS/MD pathway for exceptional students and a robust collection of courses in Biology and Chemistry. There are dozens of student groups for pre-med students and those interested in health generally, and a helpful student has collected a listing of those groups here. Many students find research positions with professors, which are important for getting good letters of recommendation. Another fascinating option is a triple degree option in conjunction with UCSF- yes, you heard that right, a triple degree program! Students get a Bachelors of Science, a Masters of Health and Medical Services, and finish with an MD. If you are ready and raring to go to med school, Berkeley is your fastest track to get there.

Runners Up

UCLA also offers many options for pre-med students to enrich their profiles for med school. They offer a Pre-Med Enrichment Program for economically disadvantaged students currently in undergraduate or community college programs, and they even offer a stipend for this program. For students of any background, they offer Med Mentors, which pairs students with med students to learn about life after the MCAT. They host many events for different specialties, and also offer free resources on their website. UCLA also offers a fascinating major outside of the usual bio or chem; Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics is a Bachelor's of Science that prepares students interested in these fields with rigorous research and advanced coursework. The campus is also conveniently close to Cedars-Sinai Hospital, a prestigious, world-class hospital on the cutting edge of regenerative medicine, cancer research, and more.

USC also has many opportunities for aspiring doctors, most notably the Dornsife Pre-Med Academy, a rigorous program guiding students through advanced science coursework and research. Their advising for pre-med is also connected to the Dornsife program, so even students not in the DPMA can get tailored advice based on the best practices for pre-meds. Outside of the regular "pre-med" track, they have specialties in other health fields that may interested students who don't just want to be physicians.

They have a wide reaching network with dozens of health center partnerships for student clinical experience, which you can view here.

Other Options to Consider

UCSB also has a strong track record supporting pre-med students, and is close to the Ridley-Tree Cancer Center for students interested in oncology. While they don't offer a pre-med academy like Dornsife, they do have many extracurricular opportunities for pre-med students to develop their skills on and off campus.

UCI offers several pre-med program, including UC PRIME Pre-Health Pathways which offers community service based learning opportunities and mentorship for premed undergrads. Their advising office has many workshops and resources for students who need guidance with the med school application process, and they offer many volunteer programs for students not in PRIME Pre-Health.

Final Thoughts

Not all pre-med paths are created equal, and the better question is not which program is best, but which one fits your needs. At University of California, Berkeley, the pace is intense and self-directed, with accelerated options like the BS/MD pathway and the triple degree program best suited to students ready to go all in and progress quickly. University of California, Los Angeles offers a rigorous environment but with more built-in support through mentorship programs and resources, and is better suited for students who want a more traditional undergrad experience. University of Southern California offers a structured approach through the Dornsife Pre-Med Academy, integrating advising and clinical opportunities with hands-on guidance.

If you prefer flexibility, University of California, Santa Barbara and University of California, Irvine provide balanced programs with support for student interests. UCSB emphasizes independence and encourages students to seek out clinical and extracurricular experiences, while UCI blends mentorship and community service through programs like UC PRIME Pre-Health Pathways without locking students into a single track. The right choice depends on how far and fast you want to go and how much guidance you need along the way.
